Of the two mountains, Glittertind is by far the more spectacular peak, rising in splendid isolation, its summit at the very edge of 200m cliffs dropping sheer to the Grotbreen glacier. The glacial environment lends an air of seriousness to the ascent, but the summit ice cap is completely crevasse-free and can be crossed without ice-axe or crampons. It was 12 o’clock. It was always 12 o’clock because my aunt had diabetes and needed sustenance at that time.
